Avoiding conflict with China is probably the most pressing job of our lifetime. Kevin Rudd has written the 12 months’s very best China guide, within the vein of Graham Allison’s Destined for War, which I reviewed in those pages ("Must we fight?" Fall 2017), and Rush Doshi’s The Long Game ("If China ran the world," Fall 2021). Rudd—who’s fluent in Mandarin and in my opinion accustomed to lots of the key figures in his guide—is the one professionally skilled Sinologist to have headed a Western govt, having served as Australia’s top minister (2007–10, 2013) and international minister ( 2010-12) underneath the Labor Party.
