Joe Biden backs war crimes trial for Putin’s illegal actions

Joe Biden insisted Vladimir Putin has “clearly committed war crimes” after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for the despot. Moscow carried out another blitz on Ukraine overnight following the move to bring Putin to justice for illegally deporting children from Ukraine to Russia since it invaded last year.

Kremlin officials claim the ICC warrant is “legally void” as Russia is one of 21 countries that do not recognize The Hague.

The US does not either – because it is incompatible with its constitution.

But asked about the development, President Biden said: “He’s clearly committed war crimes. I think it’s justified. It makes a very strong point.”

On friday night, Ukraine was attacked by 16 Russian drones, 11 of which were down. Kyiv was among the targets.

Serhiy Popko, head of the capital’s administration, said air defenses brought down all drones heading for Kyiv, while regional governor Maksym Kozytskyi said three of six were shot down. The other three hit a district bordering ally Poland.

Yesterday morning, President Volodymyr Zelensky‘s forces said Russia had also launched a number of air strikes which damaged a nursery and houses.

As the war continued to rage into its 13th month, UK military officials said they believed the Kremlin would further widen conscription to bolster its battered forces.

Deputies in the lower house of the Russian Parliament reportedly want to change the age range from 18-27 to 21-30.

This is because those in the current younger bracket can claim exemption if they are in higher education.

The new rule, due to come into force in 2024, would mean they would still have to serve once they complete their studies.

Putin is due to host China’s President Xi Jinping from tomorrow in Russia in what is seen as a further show of solidarity between their countries.

The men will have lunch on day one and hold talks on Tuesday.

It follows China acting as broker for a new entente between Iran and Saudi Arabia, adding to fears that Beijing is expanding its global influence.

The deal has been called a diplomatic coup for Xi.

Yesterday, Putin traveled to Crimea to mark the ninth anniversary of the Black Sea peninsula’s annexation from Ukraine, There, he visited a children’s center and an art school.
